Search Engine Submission Techniques with Google
How to get your business website seen
As Google is the search engine used by most Internet users - especially in
the UK - it is normally essential to get your website listed on Google and to
obtain a high ranking in the search results for searches on keywords related to
what you are selling.
If you do a search on Google, you will see two different types of results -
free listings and sponsored listings.
Free Listings
You can submit your site to Google by using the form at
http://www.google.com.au/addurl.html. However, just doing this is very unlikely
to result in your site ranking high in the free listings for keywords that are
relevant to your site. To achieve this, some Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
needs to be done to your site - and this will be explained later in this
article.
Sponsored Listings (Google AdWords)
The listings that you see on the right-hand side of the search results (and
sometimes at the top) are sponsored listings, sold by Google through its
AdWords advertising programme.
Whereas the SEO process can take many months, by using the AdWords programme
your listing will appear almost immediately - and can therefore result in
immediate sales.
Google AdWords is a pay-per-click (PPC) programme. This means that you
only pay Google if someone:
- Searches on a keyword you have chosen as relevant to what you are selling
- See your sponsored listing (advert)
- Clicks on your listing and visits your site.
So you can see that this is a good method for getting targeted (qualified)
visitors to your site.
We explain how this all works in some detail on our
website promotion services page.

Now let's go back to the topic of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and talk
about it in more detail.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Most Internet users look for information using search engines. If you search
on keywords relevant to your site Google may respond with something like
"Results 1 - 10 of about 486,000,000". But you would like your site to be listed
in the first 10! This is something of a challenge, as so would many other site
owners with similar sites.
Let's now look at some SEO principles.
Target Keywords
The first job is to discover which keywords are relevant and effective.
Those target keywords then need to be placed in the right way in locations of
your website such as the title, meta-tags and body.
Different pages of the site should be optimised towards different keyword
phrases.
Relevant Website Content
Google will examine your web pages in order to determine for which searches it
has relevance.
If your site consists entirely of flash, images or javascript, then Google
will not find any text to read - so there is no chance of a good listing!
Inbound Links
If no other sites link to your site, you are unlikely to ever get a good
position in Google's results.
The more related, high-ranking web sites which link to your
site in the right way, the better the position your site will get in Google's
search results.
SEO or PPC?
SEO is a long-term and competitive process. It takes time and effort to get
quality inbound links, and Google may take many months to respond to website
changes. However, a website that achieves a good position in the search results
will end up getting traffic without paying directly for it.
PPC will give immediate results. The downside is that you pay whenever
someone clicks on your ad and visits your site. But when the cost per sale still
results in some profit per sale - then you are onto a winning formula.
