Which SEO Companies Should You NOT Trust?
There is some scepticism about what some SEO Companies do. Some can do more
harm than good. Here's how to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Let's look at
some claims that are made:
- The company guarantees you a no. 1 position on Google
- They say they'll submit your site to thousands of search engines and
directories
- They say you'll see the results within two weeks
- They won't disclose their techniques
- They ask you to pay for delivered traffic (through their domain)
Let's look at these in turn:
Guaranteed First Position on Google
It's not possible to guarantee a no. 1 position in Google. In fact Google
doesn't sell position in its natural listings at all. It is possible to
get a good position in the sponsored links - but
that's a different story.
So even the biggest SEO companies won't give such a guarantee. There are some
companies which will claim to give you your money back if you don't get a
certain number of top ten positions. But you should read their "guarantee"
several times. Often the small print hides some get-out clauses, and often the
guarantee will only apply to phrases which practically no-one is likely to
submit to the search engine.
Submitting Your Site to Thousands of Search Engines
This will gain you practically nothing. The smaller search engines and
directories will generate practically no traffic and have minimal effect on the
ranking of your site.
See the Results Within a Week or Two
If your site is new, unless it is in a market where the competition is very
low, it is likely to be several months before your site starts climbing up the
free listings. If you need instant results, then you should consider going for
sponsored links. But some companies lead you to
believe that you are paying them for position in the natural listings when in
fact they intend to get you position in the sponsored listings. Companies should
always make the distinction clear.
Techniques Not Disclosed
A company should always be prepared to tell you what techniques it is using.
If they are evasive, or try to "blind you with science" it may be that they are
using
techniques deprecated by the search engines. Search engines are becoming
ever more clever at determining techniques which are designed to "cheat" them -
and sites using such techniques are now being banned from their listings for
long periods of time. Deprecated techniques include the use of certain types of
"doorway pages" and "cloaking" techniques.
Pay For Delivered Traffic Through Their Domain
Some SEO companies will offer you terms such that you pay for additional
visitors to your site. In order to track these visitors, the SEO company will
often propose to have a new domain through which the traffic is delivered.
If this domain is set up to belong to the SEO company rather than you, then you
are likely to have to pay on-going monthly charges in order to get the traffic.
As soon as you stop paying, the SEO company will switch the traffic so that it
goes to a competitor's site.
